Facts About CNG and LNG

Fleet of Omnitrans CNG buses

Both CNG (compressed natural gas) and LNG (liquefied compressed natural gas) fuels have been shown to decrease polluting emissions by as much as 87 percent over diesel fuel. In 2000, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) reinforced this decision by mandating that all new transit buses be powered by alternative, low-emission fuels.

In December 2000, residents of the neighborhood surrounding the Omnitrans facility expressed their ongoing concerns regarding the occasional release of odorized CNG from the fueling station. A number of community meetings were held to discuss these concerns, and as a result in April 2002, Omnitrans has switched to odorless LNG.

LNG is used by the Orange County Transportation Authority, as well as transit systems in Arizona, Texas and Oregon. The United Parcel Service uses LNG at its Ontario facility.
