Omnitrans is proposing changes that would impact bus routes throughout the San Bernardino valley effective September 8, 2015.  Plans include streamlining service in the west valley, adding a new freeway express route on I-10, realigning routes to serve a new transit center in San Bernardino, and implementing a new customer application process for Access ADA service. To gather public comments, a series of meetings are scheduled between March 19 and 27.  (details below)

West of the I-15 freeway, Omnitrans proposes realignment of nine north-south routes to improve directness of service, reduce travel time and simplify the route network.  In response to frequent customer requests, freeway express Route 290 is proposed to offer weekday, peak-hour service on the I-10 corridor between Montclair and San Bernardino with stops at Ontario Mills and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

With the September opening of the San Bernardino Transit Center (SBTC), eleven bus routes need to be adjusted to streamline access to the new site located on Rialto Avenue between E and F Streets in downtown.  The facility is adjacent to an Omnitrans sbX rapid transit station. Neighboring transit agencies, Mountain Transit and Victor Valley Transit Authority, also will serve the transit center.  In 2016, when construction of a rail extension is complete, the SBTC will provide a direct connection to Metrolink commuter trains.

“The new transit center will serve approximately 6,000 customers per day as they make connections between routes,” said Omnitrans spokesperson Wendy Williams. “Passenger amenities include sheltered waiting areas, real-time arrival signs, public restrooms, a customer service desk, and 24/7 security.  It will be a LEED gold certified facility, meaning it incorporates the best in energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly design.”

Also in September, more direct service to San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino is proposed by extending Route 1 east to Victoria Avenue, in response to customer requests.  At the same time, frequency on Route 1 north of downtown San Bernardino is proposed to increase to every 15 minutes, instead of every 30 minutes today.

To utilize Access, transportation service for person with disabilities, customers first must complete an application to determine eligibility under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Omnitrans proposes implementing an in-person element to the process, which is conducted by mail currently, to help customers complete their application in a timely manner.

The service proposals, including any changes made as the result of public comment, are expected to go to the Omnitrans Board of Directors for final approval on May 6, 2015.

    I work for the Department of Aging and Adult Services, (the old route 9). My thoughts were to have the #5 turn east on Rialto Ave then south on Lena to Mill and west back to Waterman, maybe three times a day. We really need a bus to service us so our aged and disabled people can access us easier. Between Rialto Ave and Mill St there are no stops so the bus wouldn’t even miss any other bus riders. No need to disrupt everyone else.

  2. How about catering to church goers? I know at Sunrise Church Rialto on Ayala north of the 210, many need a ride to church. If you are going to cater to gamblers, let’s help people get to their places of worship. Do the buses run on Sundays?

      Hi Tressy,

      A number of Omnitrans services operate Sundays during the day. For Sunrise church, Route 22 operates hourly on Sundays, serving the intersection of Bohnert and Ayala, which is 0.5 miles away (0.5 miles is what is referred to as the “walking standard,” or the acceptable distance a person should have to walk to get to the bus. Omnitrans strives to make the walking standard available for as many passengers as it can, but not all passengers are within the standard).

      Under the current schedule, northbound arrivals on Sundays are at approximately 6:50, 7:35, 8:35, 9:35, 10:35, 11:35, 12:35, 1:35, 2:35, 3:35, 4:35, 5:35, and 6:35. Southbound departures to head back into the main part of Rialto leave Bonhert/Ayala at 7:07, 7:59, 8:59, 9:59, 10:59, 11:59, 12:59, 1:59, 2:59, 3:59, 4:59, 5:59, and 6:59. Route 22 operates on Riverside Ave in Rialto between the 210 and Arrowhead Hospital, where the majority of connections are for your members who ride from other parts of the area. Route 14 via Foothill Blvd operates every 15 minutes on Sunday to connect with the 22.

      Note on the stops: The arriving northbound 22 stop is located at the intersection of Ayala and Bonhert. For the southbound 22 to get back down to main Rialto, the stop is actually on Bonhert and Brierwood, which is one block east of Ayala. Hope this information helps.

      Of course, not every single church has a route within 0.5 miles operating on Sundays, but many of the major churches in the area do have Sunday bus service at least a short walk away, such as Sunrise, The Rock, Abundant Living, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, and Water of Life.

  3. I am very excited for the new transit station. I love San Bernardino. I believe that this new transit station will have bring strong sense of pride back to our city. I want to thank Omnitrans for investing in our city. I believe that this will be a gateway to revitalize our city. To make it what it used to be in the 50s and 60s. I’m only 24 but I still believe in San Bernardino. The current transit station is located behind the carasol mall, which I remember as a kid used to be the place to be. Now it’s currently used as a county offices. At the current transit station. There is nothing really to do besides stand there and wait for your bus. In the winter, since the sun sets earlier, there are many people still taking the bus waiting in a poorly lit area with no security for the transit riders. I have a friend that was waiting for the northbound 2 and was mugged. That was in 2011. There are also person attempting to solicit drugs to transit riders. I do believe that people at the current transit station shouldn’t be allowed to loiter. A person shouldn’t wait more than 30 mins for their bus. I have seen RTA enforce this with their downtown station. It seems to work. To keep those who would make the experience of riding the bus an unpleasant one out. When I tell people that I the bus to work I am proud to say that, because I firmly believe in cutting down the carbon footprint and congestion of vehicles. Many people look at me with puzzled looks why I take the bus. They have never taken one and think it is a bad thing with bad people riding. Ever since high school I have used omnitrans as my primary transit system. I want to say thank you again for giving San Bernardino a second chance.

  4. Proposed brochure on page 23 and 24 have identical maps so what does Route 84 look like?

  5. what about having the SBX or have the #2 bus continue to the new VA loma Linda Ambulatory bldg being built which is located on Redlands blvd between mtn view and calif streets
