Omnitrans Mid Valley Facility
Omnitrans took a giant step down the road to expansion last year, when the agency purchased more than 28 acres on which to build a new mid-valley transportation center. Set in the city of Rancho Cucamonga between Omnitrans’ other Southern California-based facilities in San Bernardino and Montclair, the center is designed to allow Omnitrans to serve approximately 1.5 million new customers each year.
The facility will be home to a refueling depot, maintenance garage, offices and space for 250 buses. Heavy bus maintenance still will be performed at the San Bernardino facility, but running repairs and inspections will be performed in mid-valley. Supervisors, personnel and payroll representatives also will likely be based at the new facility, which will be built just off of Interstate 15 at an estimated cost of $35 million.
Securing funding and construction of the mid-valley facility will take an estimated four years to complete, with an opening expected in 2007 or 2008. Though it probably will take a decade for the facility to be fully utilized, Omnitrans’ mid-valley facility will being making an impact on the Inland Empire’s ever-increasing growth (and traffic congestion) right away.
“A full bus on the street takes 40 – 60 cars off of the road,” explains
CEO/General Manager Durand L. Rall. “Our buses make 20 trips per day. That’s
1200 people per day off of the freeway for just one bus.”
